NON CONFORMING DRIVERS
New for 2008, we have to draw your attention to the rules surrounding certain Drivers and their legality under the rules of the game from the start of the year. The Royal & Ancient (R&A) have disallowed the use of certain types of drivers due to a trampoline effect from the club face (e.g. the club face is too springy).
Please note it is each player’s responsibility to check their own clubs, (there are thousands of different clubs affected). To assist, please click on this “Non Conforming Drivers” link to see a separate web page from the R&A that offers more information including a section that shows the entire list of banned clubs. If you are still unsure, we suggest that you contact a golfing shop to have them inspect your Driver or contact the match committee for further advice.
We need to advise, as with all Royal & Ancient rules, any club member/player not conforming to the new rule will be disqualified from the event & from winning any sundry prizes.
SUMMER COMP 07
FEBRUARY NEWS UPDATE
MIXED FORTUNES EVENT
What do you do when you can’t make your mind up whether to play Stableford, Par or Stroke for the last event of the summer calendar?Well you combine all 3.That’s what occurred to bring the 2007/08 season to a close.
6 holes of the 18 were allocated to the one of the categories and this kept the players on their toes as they thought of what strategy to take, to maximize their scores. And the winner of the overall competition was “The Ladies Man” himself Kevin D’Cruze with 44 points, 2 clear from Peter Barrett. Thanks go to all who organized the day, which culminated in a hearty BBQ with plenty of prizes being given out.But the biggest thanks of all must go to Alf Wettinger, who has worked tirelessly behind the scenes to make this summer comp one of the best to date.Well done Alf.
So as the summer comp draws to its conclusion, finally we would also like to acknowledge Stuart Craven who capped of a great start to his Rosehill membership by winning the summer eclectic with 58.5 and also to the #1 attendee for the season, Garry Cook. Now it's over to the 2008 winter comp starting on Saturday March 1st.Please click here for the new fixtures.
RUSSIAN STABLEFORD (Select)
It was a case of Brother helping Brother as the old Communist Regime came to Rosehill with the Russian Stableford team competition. And it was the Red team of Comrade Carl and Comrade Ken (Andersson & Moore) who absolutely blitzed the field with a combined effort of 95 points!!!This was a massive 12 shots clear of 2nd place Les Eade and Geoff Harris who had 83 points, with Mark Wilson and Alan Green taking out 3rd with 74 points.
To keep the Communist theme going, later that night the guys enjoyed Chinese food at the summer wind up.Well done to all the players, but especially to the Comrades on a crushing victory.
SUMMER CUP (Round Two)
4 visitors tried their luck for the first time and also got to witness the final round of the Summer Cup for 2008, and it was our newest member, Stuart Craven, who took off the major prize. He carded a net 71 to with his previous 69 to take out this prestigious event with a combined 140.First round leader, Alan Green stumbled with a 77 but held onto 2nd place, with a combined 143.Well done to both players.
In the single day event, Garry Cook was a runaway winner with a net 68, 2 shots clear of Peter Barret, followed by the new champ, Stuart Craven coming home 3rd with his 71.
MONTHLY MEDAL
Always the Bridesmaid, never the Bride is how we used to describe Jim
Plowman when it came to the coveted Monthly Medal.Over the last 12
months, Jim has run second (in a count back) 5 times!!!He just can’t
crack the big one.
That is until now.Yes, last Saturday Jim was the runaway winner for
his first ever monthly medal in the Par event.
(well he won by just one shot, but with Jim’s record that is a runaway)
Jim's Smiling
Jim carded +7 to take the shirt from Alf Wettinger with +6 and Geoff Harris with +5.Well done Jim, it just goes to show that perseverance is the key.By the way, Jim lost two shots off his Handicap as a result. But is he worried about that?.............Not in the slightest.
JANUARY NEWS UPDATE
SUMMER CUP (Round One)
21 players braved the early heat to try their luck in Round One of the prestigious Summer Cup competition.Alan Green carded a very good 66 to lead the field, with Alf Wettinger 2 shots back on 68 and Jim Wyatt holding down third with 69 in a count back from Stuart Craven. The second and final round is in a fortnight, after the regular monthly medal is run and won.Good luck to all players.
SUMMER WIND UP TROPHY NIGHT
The details are out for the summer trophy night dinner. The Wah Sun Chinese Restaurant in Morley is the venue ON Saturday February 16th at 7.00pm.The venue is BYO, and the cost of the meal is being subsidised by the Summer Competition funds, but this is subject to how many games you have played. Check out the Social News page for full details.
LES SHACKLETON UNWELL
News has come through that our own Les Shackleton has suffered a mild heart attack just one day after retiring from work.He has had some corrective surgery and may require more, but from everyone at the club Les, get yourself well again and we look forward to seeing you back down the course again.
BRING A MATE DAY - STABLEFORD
Perfect golfing conditions must have been the answer to having 7 players all tied on 41 stableford points after Saturdays bring a mate day. However, doing just that one shot better was Carl Andersson (from Sweden with 2 s’s) who won the day on 42 points.
After the most count backs in the clubs history Gary Cook took out second with Stuart Craven making his first appearance on the winners list, taking third.Well done guys.We can also report that our trusted handicapper, Bill McComb, had no trouble getting to sleep on Saturday night. He doesn’t have to count sheep, he just count backs!!!
2 BALL AMBROSE
It was a case of two heads are better than one on Saturday in the 2 ball Ambrose drawn event.22 players including a number of guests tried their luck with their new found partners.Running out winners on the day were the team of Ray Riechard and Bill Curtis who were comfortable 3 shot winners over Carl Andersson and Mark Burich who piped Hugh Letessier and Les Shackleton by only half a shot.Well done to all the players.
MONTHLY MEDAL
It was a day of first on Saturday, with the first game of 2008
seeing Hugh Letessier bagging his first Summer Monthly
Medal with 41 stableford points, to hold out Jim Plowman in
yet another a count back. DavidRange took out third with
40 points in a high scoring affair.
However, in another first, Kevin D’Cruze scored his first ever
Players in Form birdie. He completed the task on the par 4 sixth hole.
Hugh & Kevin To make his achievement even more memorable, it was also
the first week of the birds nest.Nice one Kev!!!
But not wanting to be outdone, it should also be noted that Hugh bagged an Eagle on the par 5 ninth on the previous week.It was a low key affair, with Hugh only contacting channels 7, 9, 10 and the ABC to advise them. (SBS declined the offer and Fox want video proof).Unfortunately we missed reporting the event, but have to pay due credit now.Well done to the swollen one!!!
DECEMBER NEWS UPDATE
NEW YEARS TROPHY
It’s official, Gary Cook has a drinking problem, that is to say he doesn’t know what bottle of scotch to open first. This is after receiving a bottle of Chivas Regal, Jameson and Wild Turkey as first prize in the New Years Trophy stroke event. He scored a net 71 to win in a count back from the “still” in form Les Shackleton, with Mark Wareham in 3rd place with a 72.
The club also has a new member who has just completed his third card. Stuart Craven joins the club with an impressive 14 handicap.Welcome aboard Stuart, we hope you will have fun and get into the Rosehill spirit (just like Gary)
XMAS TROPHY
Santa Claus himself came to town, well to
Rosehill at least as a good field contested the
annual Xmas Trophy. The Jolly Red suited man
(a.k.a. Ray Riechard) got into the spirit of
things from the very start, arriving (minus the
sleigh) in costume, but he then proceeded to
play the entire game in character (good job it
wasn’t warm Santa)
The top 3 players on the day needed a count
back to separate them after all carding 41
stableford points.The eventual winner was
Steve Hopkins, who edged out Grant Stokes,
with Les Cook taking out 3rd.All place getters
got various prizes donated by Ray and Alf, for
which the club is very grateful. Hoppy also took
home a Christmas Hamper, with Grant scoring
a bottle of wine as well. All players on the day
received a monogrammed pen courtesy of the
course management. RSGC hopes all club
members and their families have a great
Christmas and New Year.
Winners are Christmas Grinners
While Santa Ponders the Par 3, 14th (above)
PAR EVENT
23 starters wiped the sleep from their eyes, only to be greeted with blowy wintery type weather for the Par event. But it was the President, making his first visit to the summer comp this year, who lead the way, taking out the Par event with an impressive +6.Les Shackleton continued his fine form from last week, backing up with a consistent +4, while Alan Green took out third with a +2.
The club also welcomed a visitor trying his luck.Stuart Craven used his existing WAGL handicap did well with a +3.However, it is Kevin who had better check the board next game as the Handicapper has pounced and he is now down to 10.Well done to all the winners.
STABLEFORD EVENT
Probably due to the wind up the night before, a smaller field fought out the Stableford event for week 2 of Summer golf’.But this did not deter Les “Grumpier Old Man” Shackleton from scoring a very nice 40 points to take out the event from Geoff Harris on 38 points with Gary “Ginger Spice” Cook rounding out third spot.Another victor on the day was Kevin “Angelina” Stonehouse who took the cash on the birds nest jackpot on the 3rd.Well done to all of the players.
As a reminder to all players the AGM is on this Wednesday night (Dec 12th) at the Hazelmere Community Hall at 7.00pm.Light refreshments served. Please do your very best to be there.
STROKE EVENT
Steve (Hoppy) Hopkins hit the ultimate shot on Saturday to kick start the
Summer Comp off with a bang. He slotted in a Hole in One on the Par 3 10th
to the extreme delight of not only himself but the 15 other players.
This
however, was not the only highlight. In weather conditions more like the
middle of winter with heavy showers and cool conditions it was a case of
Too Many Cooks, as the Cook brothers ran away with the overall event.
Hole in One
Hoppy
The senior of the two, Les carded a very impressive 64 to show a clean pair of heels to the younger Gary who hit 69.Alf Wettinger took out 3rd spot with 71.
So the question is what happened to Hoppy? After using only one shot on the 10th, what was the rest of his round like. His answer….”Who Cares”Well done Steve Les and the rest of the players.Problem is now that we will be seeing Hoppy at the Wind up this Friday night hovering to every group at pre dinner drinks with a detailed description of how he shot the big one.(who can blame him)
Just a reminder to the Summer players, you must book in advance every week just like in the Winter comp.Unfortunately on Saturday a player who did not book and just turned up, was not allowed to not play as the public following our group was too heavy.
JOHN SHILBURY UNWELL
To all those players who remember him, John Shilbury, a long serving member of the club has unfortunately suffered a stroke and is now convalescing at the Jewish aged care home in Woodrow Avenue Dianella. A few of the club members have visited him and although he could not speak the expression on his face showed he was certainly happy to see them.If your thinking of heading that way, he likes dark chocolate.
SUMMER GOLF UPDATE
The Summer golf season kicks off on Saturday December 1st running for 13 weeks and finishing on Saturday February 23rd 2008.The format is a shortened version of the Winter competition with the main difference being starting at much earlier time to avoid the heat of the afternoon.Tee Off time is 7 am.Alf will be running the comp this year.
The Bookings & Fixtures page has the contact details to book as well as the full Summer fixtures. As per the Winter comp, you will need to book Wednesday night, but in the Summer Alf is your contact.Reservations in the summer time is critical as the course is very busy at that time and failure to do so could see you miss out altogether or be placed at the end of the field several hours after the club’s allocated “Tee off” time.

(don’t forget to put your name on the email) or put your name on the board at the club.We need to know who is interested in playing over the Summer well in advance so as to enable the course management to reserve sufficient spots for us. A “Summer Club Handicap” can be obtained after handing in 3 cards. Official “WAGL” handicaps will be accepted.
Each week Bill McComb has offered to record the results, “Handicaps”, “Eccelectic” and “Attendances”.Jim Plowman will take charge of the “Lucky Tens” and take on the role of the “Master at Arms” and Alan Green will be handing the “Bird’s nest” and conducting the “Draw” .These volunteers will ensure that the meetings will be conducted smoothly and make it an enjoyable day for all the players. On behalf of the members thank you to all the volunteers.
At the end of the season a social function will be arranged to present the trophies, details will come later from Alf and will also be on our Social Events page.
