NON CONFORMING DRIVERS

New for 2008, we have to draw your attention to the rules surrounding certain Drivers and their legality under the rules of the game from the start of the year.  The Royal & Ancient (R&A) have disallowed the use of certain types of drivers due to a trampoline effect from the club face (e.g. the club face is too springy).

Please note it is each player’s responsibility to check their own clubs, (there are thousands of different clubs affected).  To assist, please click on this “Non Conforming Drivers” link to see a separate web page from the R&A that offers more information including a section that shows the entire list of banned clubs.  If you are still unsure, we suggest that you contact a golfing shop to have them inspect your Driver or contact the match committee for further advice.  We need to advise, as with all Royal & Ancient rules, any club member/player not conforming to the new rule will be disqualified from the event & from winning any sundry prizes.

WINTER COMP 2008

NOVEMBER NEWS UPDATE

MEMORIAL DAY

The final day of winter competition is always a fun day with a select teams Ambrose event, playing for the Phil Klavus Cup.  A few sore heads turned up after over indulging the night before at the trophy presentation, but this did not slow the anticipation of a big day ahead.

It was like being at the bookies ring at the races as bets were flying this way and that, with just about every team putting in $5.00 a player in a winner takes all show down.

Some players had gone out of their way to look the part, with the fashion leaders being “Team United”, be splendored in their sky blue shirts and black pants.  It was this example that got some other thinking and we saw a smart looking “Team Targa Tossers” wearing “last years” outfits but “this years” hats. Unfortunately after the game, they had to surgically remove the shirt of big Hugh, as it was just a tad tight!!!

Then we had the TL boys, or as they are now officially known “Team Looser”.  Mark Burich (who always pulls them out the poo) thought he had gone back to Nu Zollund and was part of the “All Blacks”, he even wanting to do the Haka before the game.  Turns out all the shirts belonged to Robbo and he got up at sparrows fart to wash them before the game, just so they could look the part.  Problem was that the rest of the team thought the shirts were a bit on the large size for them.

But onto the game and after 11 birdies and 1 eagle,

it was in fact Team Looser pictured here that won

the day for the second year in a row, lead of course

by Mark Burich, with Richard Church, Martin Page

and the infamous Robbo making up the numbers.

They hit a sensational 59 off the stick for a net

 51.625.  Nice effort.

A few shots back were “Team United” comprising of

Keith Scrivens, Marty Wotjala, Kevin D’Cruze and

Derek Russell, who had a 66 off the stick for a net

56.75 and in third spot were Team “Captains Kaous” lead by Colin Lane, Shane Seward, Les Cook and Bill McComb who had 67 for a net 58.

Following the game, we were treated to a magnificent BBQ

provided by the Rosehill course management, for which we are

most grateful, this was a great way to finish off the year.

After the meal we presented some more trophies, including the

Monthly Medals and Eagle trophies for 2008, with the final award

being the very prestigious POTY award, which this year most

appropriately went to Robbo.  Unlike most years, there was not a

specific incident that he won it for, but rather, it seemed the most

 logical thing to do.

Robbo has now joined the list of some very worthy winners.

So the Winter season for 2008 is wrapped up, with the Summer games commencing this Saturday at 7am.  Don’t for get to contact Alf if you want to play and also don’t forget to come along to the AGM at the Hazelmere Hall on Wednesday evening, December 10th at 7pm.

DOWNER EDI RIMTEC SPONSORS DAY

Stableford was the event for the last individual game of the 2009 winter comp with thanks to our sponsor Downer EDI Rimtec.

Unfortunately the weather turned very wet for a while mid game, making scoring challenging, but it didn’t upset everyone as for the first time this year we had a three way tie.

41 was the score and it was Garry Cook who cleaned up in a count back, not to mention chipping in from 40 metres to take the birds nest, from Peter Marriot who also birdied the birds nest hole, but wasn’t in the comp!!!!  Peter also hung on for second on the day from Les Cook popped out occasionally from his sheltered golf cart to take out third.  Well played guys

Don’t forget next Friday is the wind up at Rosehill Lodge (6.30pm pre dinner drinks).  Dress to impress and come along for a fun night.  The next day we have 18 holes of Ambrose (select teams) followed by a fully catered BBQ at the course after the game.  The club is putting some money on the bar and we have plenty of prizes to hand out as well, so please stick around for the festivities.

Finally, please remember the AGM is to be held on Wednesday December 10th at the Hazelmere Hall (just up from the club) starting at 7.00pm.  We would like as many financial members to attend as possible, so you can vote in the new committee for 2009 and discuss areas of interest.  After the AGM the club will supply drinks and snacks as we say Merry Christmas to one and all.

PRESIDENT v CAPTAIN MATCHPLAY

One of the few times when you actually have to beat your opponent

is in Matchplay and the annual Presidents v’s Captain Matchplay

event saw some interesting results, with the President’s team

coming out on top by just one victory 7 to 6.

Most games went to the wire, but there were a couple of blow outs,

which has the handicapper checking the form of these illegibly high

handicappers and he may have a surprise of two in store for them.

Full results can be found by clicking here, but well done to everyone who gave it there all for El-Presidentai.

Don’t forget next week is the Downer EDI-Rimtec sponsored day, which is decided over a game of Stableford.  Also we have finalized the numbers who want to attend the Wind up which is on Friday November 28th.  For those who have put their names down to come, please don’t miss it.

THE WEEKEND AWAY

The best turn up we’ve ever had made the journey “down south” for the clubs annual weekend away which turned out to be a lot of fun, with everyone having a good time and playing plenty of golf.

Friday saw 38 players venture to a beautiful little secret known as Harvey Golf Course for bragging rights in the Ambrose competition and the winners again (well three quarters of them) were the self proclaimed “Dream Team” lead this time by the sensational Kevin D’Cruze and backed up by regulars Churchy, and Robbo.  Apparently Martin Page also played, but the other guys said he didn’t really contribute, which was a bit harsh.  At least you couldn’t miss “Pagey” in a lovely Hawaiian shirt…………….NOT!!!

Second place went to “Team One” with the experienced crew of Bill McComb, Les Cook, Shane Seward and Colin Lane, with third place going to FIGJAM, comprising of Mark (Cousy-Bro-Sweet-Mate) Burich, Marty Wotjala, Keith Scrivens and Derek Russell.

The Best Net Score went to the A Team (we can guess what the “A” stands for) which was Alan Prodger, Neil (Money Bags) Buscumb, Glenn Andersson and Jim (Bugle Arse) Wyatt with 69 off the stick.

The gang all retired to our home for the weekend which was the Koombana bay resort at Bunbury for some food, drink and a hell of a lot of cards.

Saturday’s game was at the much improved Sanctuary Golf Course near Bunbury, with 42 players turning up for a game of Stableford.  This years winner was club vice captain Shane Seward with 43 points in a runaway victory over Neil Buscumb on 39 points and Derek Russell picking up another third for the weekend with 36.

Of the visitors who came down, the best player was Steve Mahoney also with 43 followed by Glenn Andersson with 34.

After the game it was back to the Koombana Bay where the club put on a fantastic BBQ which was well organized by Mark Wilson, with a lot of hard work done by the ladies who came along for their “relaxing” weekend off?  Thanks Ladies.

Jerry Mercer did a Sterling job with the Lucky 10’s, selling 34 sheets, ably assisted by his Kiwi Bingo caller, Big Ned.  The Master at Arms didn’t miss many either with the biggest shock being the story that one of the boys offered Les Musgrave a cone on Friday night.  Les didn’t take up the offer as he only wanted strawberry ice-cream and they didn’t have any.

Finally, 30 guys headed to Pinjarra for a third game on what turned out to be yet another great day of weather.  Then it was off home to Perth to soak in the tub, get the Dencorub out and hit the bed by sunset.

Thanks to everyone who helped out, we hope that all the players and guests had fun and are looking forward to 2009’s trip.

NOVEMBER MONTHLY MEDAL

The air was warm, the sky was blue, the course was in fine condition and the players were pumped, all vying to be the one who would take off the final hallowed yellow polo shirt that bears the insignia “Monthly Medal”.

Who would be the chosen one who would stand up high upon the Rosehill Mountain, fighting off all comers, in the winner takes all Par event???

Some great performances were put in by some tried and tested club legends. Mark (who needs middle irons anyway) Burich drove his socks off.  Richard “Family Guy” Church took money from all contenders.  Martin (I don’t wanna play in the last group again) Page was hitting the pin at will.  But it was Kevin “The Pres” Pearce who had a storming +4 that took out third place and Garry (I’m on the way back) Cook who got second with a +6.  Great stuff guys.

The club’s Raffle was also drawn on Saturday morning by hard working Social Secretary Jerry Mercer.  The winner was Ned Kelly who took away $250!!!.  Shane Seward took home $150 and Les Musgrave won a golf bag, balls and clubs!!!! (shame it was only 5 inches high).  David Range also cleaned up with 3 prizes including a golf bag (full size this time).  Many thanks to Jerry for all his hard work in selling the tickets and getting the prizes together.

Now don’t forget next Friday is the starting day of the one we’ve all been waiting for, The Weekend Away, with an Ambrose team game at Harvey (11am) followed by a club event at Sanctuary on Saturday (11am) and a make up your own game at Pinjarra on the way home on Sunday at....…you guessed it, 11am.

Koombana Bay resort is again our home for 2 nights, with Friday evening being a do what you want night, but on Saturday evening the club will provide a fully catered BBQ with Drinks supplied as well.

Don’t forget to drive safe and come along to one of the highlights of the year.  Any last minute concerns, please contact Derek on 0407-938-980.  See you there.

Oh and by the way Robbo won the Shirt with +6. cool

OCTOBER NEWS UPDATE

OVER/UNDER 55’S TROPHY

The last major trophy was run and won on the weekend, or should we say trophies, with 2 on offer in the over and under 55 stableford event.  It’s always interesting to see who comes out on top, with the more mature golfers pitted against the brazen young smash and whack types.

In the mature group we saw Neil Buscumb guide his zimmer frame around the course to take out yet another trophy with 37 stableford points.  He was closely followed by a couple of Les’s.  Not the female bikie type (although one does ride a bike), rather Les Cook and Les Musgrave who both had 36 points with Cookie taking the prize for second in the count back.

Now as for the young whiper snappers, we saw a major round put in by Kevin D’Cruze who had 47…..we’ll spell that in case you thought it was a misprint……forty-seven points!!!  An amazing round.  In second place was daylight, who finished well ahead of Derek Russell who had 37 points.  Third spot went to Eddy Lorenti on 36.

To add to Kevin’s great score it should be noted that he actually wiped the last hole just in case the handicapper was looking.  Unfortunately for Kev though the handicapper was lurking in the clubhouse, but Bill said he needed a bigger calculator to work out the final damage.  He thinking 3 shots off, but the rest of the group demanded at least 8.  Let’s see what he comes up with.  Well played by all, but especially our trophy winners

CAPTAINS TROPHY

The penultimate major trophy was up for grabs on Saturday with a stroke round to decide the 2008 Captains Trophy and it was long time club player Lawrie “Truck” Wishart who "Drove" his way to victory with a net 67.

It was clear that "Truck" was in for the “Long haul” as he offered his playing partners some “No Doze” to keep them awake while he “Delivered” the goods leaving a “Convoy” of players in his wake.  Truck was heard to say “10-4 rubber ducky” as he accepted the prize.

2nd spot went to the in form Italian Stallion (well more Rocking Horse these days) Lou “5-syllables” Digregorio, one shot back on 68, while 3rd was taken by Richard “Jamie Oliver” Church, who couldn’t stay after the game as he was off to perform wonders for his girlfriend in the “Kitchen of Love!!!”  Well played fella’s.

Don’t forget we have some major events coming up soon.  The weekend away is on November 7, 8 & 9 and the Trophy Night is on Friday November 28th, followed the day after by the closing game for the 2008 Winter Comp  This will be an Ambrose team event, followed by a full BBQ, which is supplied courtesy of the Rosehill Course at the club house immediately after the game.  Our club will also be supplying limited drinks for members as well to finish the year off on a high.

4BBB STABLEFORD SELECT (WESTATE DAY)

A favourite on the calendar is the 4 ball better ball

stableford team’s event, where you get to choose your

partner.  And it was the dynamic duo (ha!!!) of Kevin

Pearce and Lou 5-syllables who took out the major prize

 with 46 points.

It was a close thing though with Dave “Robbo” Robertson

and Richard “Family Guy” Church missing out in a count

back.  In third spot with 44 points was Les Musgrave and

 Peter Barrett.

           The Dynamic Duo

Many thanks go to our sponsor in Westate for their kind support.

OCTOBER MONTHLY MEDAL

We have yet another winner of the coveted yellow shirt in new player Derek Saunders who kept up his fine form of late to win the stroke event on 68, one shot clear of perennial bridesmaid Peter Buttfield on 69 and Alan Prodger on 71.  It will be interesting to see how Mr. Saunders fairs down the track, as our beloved handicapper has stripped him of another 2 shots (down to 20).  Well played guys.

SEPTEMBER NEWS UPDATE

GRAND FINAL WEEKEND MEDALFORD??

What a great game it was with the Hawks getting up in an exciting affair, but it wasn’t the only special game of the weekend.  20 odd non footy supporting players rocked up to Rosehill to play the first ever game of Medalford.  What the ??????

Apparently Medalford is a hybrid game of Stableford and Stroke (why don’t they call it Strokeford?).  You play a game of stroke but also record your stableford points as well, then you work out your net score, then add half of your handicap, then times this by the difference between your full handicap and the stableford pointS, then you divide this by your club number, then add the first number you thought off.  Easy!!!!

The winner should then be the person who get’s the closest score to their I.Q.  It must have worked as the winner was Les Eade on 20, followed by Mark Burich on 26 who beat Shane Seward in a count pack.  Only kidding on the IQ guys.  Hope you had a fun day anyway.

PAR BOWL ROUND TWO / FINAL

What a sensational weekend for scoring!!!!  Everyone got in on the act.

Kevin (The Pres) Pearce pipped Eddy Lorenti in a count back on +3 to take out the individual event.  Well played guys.  But wait there’s more………….

Les Eade got +1 to take out third on the day, but when added to his +3 from last week, he scored well enough for 2nd overall.  Well done Les.  But wait there’s even more………….

Derek Saunders scored +1 and when added to his great +6 from last week saw him win the Par bowl trophy for 2008 with +7.  Congratulations Derek on your maiden trophy.  But wait there’s still more………….

Kevin D’Cruze scored his first ever Eagle by chipping in (or was it driving in) on the 11th.  Great scoring Kev, you’re now a member of a very exclusive group.  But wait, there’s yet even more……………

Apparently Robbo scored extremely well.  Wacko Robbo!!!!  Problem is, he scored so well that the handicapper doesn’t quite know how to calculate his new handicap.  He simply doesn’t know how many strokes were, err, I mean are required?

This is one weekend that the players won’t forget in a hurry.

PAR BOWL ROUND ONE

The next major trophy up for grabs, the Par Bowl, played over two rounds, commenced on Saturday in blowy changeable conditions.  30 plus players turned up with one player standing tall.  New member Derek Saunders shot the round of his life to win the day on +6, two shots clear of a consistent John Trewick on +4, who was a shot clear of new club champion Mark Wareham on +3.

Derek said that he hadn’t planned on playing next week but is now frantically making changes to his itinerary.  The handicapper might have a say in just what handicap Derek takes into round 2 though. Good luck to all next week.

SEPTEMBER MONTHLY MEDAL

With the dust well and truly settled on the club championships the hunt was on again for the elusive Yellow shirt in the September monthly medal, which was decided over a round of stableford.

Keeping up the good form was Grant Stokes who scored 42 points to win by two from Pter Buttfield and Hugh Lettissier who had 39.

The win came at a price though with Grant loosing a shot of his handicap and now dropping into A-Grade.  Well played guys.

AUGUST NEWS UPDATE

CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS Round 3

Some great scoring was the highlight of the 3rd and final round of the 2008 club championships and we have four clear and very happy winners.

A Grade & club champion for this year is Mark Wareham shooting 80, 80 & 79 for a 239.  This was a massive 18 shots clear of runner up Kevin (the Pres) Pearce.

A-Reserve champion is Dave (Vegi) Thompson shooting 90, 80 & 78 for 248, this great scoring will now see Vegi in A-Grade once the handicapper gets hold of his 78 (net 64)  Runner up was Grant Stokes who finished 13 shots back.

B-Grade champion is Martin Page who blazed home shooting 95, 94 & 85.  Kevin Stonehouse was runner up 6 shots back.

C-Grade champion is John McGrath who had rounds of 97, 93 & 101, to win by the closest margin of 2 shots over Les Musgrave.

Well played to our four new champions, who could not take the smiles of their face (above)

In the overall game based on handicaps Dave Thompson did it again, with another 64, from Grant Stokes on 67 who piped Martin Page in a count back for third.  Well done guys.

The full club championship results can be found on the results page.

CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS Round 2

It was moving day on Saturday in round 2 of the 2008 club championships and with once again perfect weather conditions greeting the field.

A Grade leader Mark Wareham has put in another round of 80, to remain in first spot, to now be 8 shots clear of Garry Cook, with Richard Church and Alan Prodger tied a further 4 shots back.

There is a new A-Reserve leader with Dave Thompson shooting an 80 as well to lead by 6 shots.  Peter Barrett, Peter Buttfield and Grant Stokes are the chasing pack.

B-Grade is still very close with David Range jumping to the lead with a 90 to hold off Martin Page by 2 shots, with Lawrie Wishart and Kevin Stonehouse one shot back in third.

C-Grade has a tie for first spot now with John McGrath holding the lead on the fact that he had a better round of 93 over Les Musgrave who had 97.  Lou Digregorio has slipped into third spot five shots back with Alf Wettinger a further 6 shot back.

It’s the final round next week and as per tradition, the top four players in each grade will be paired together, so good luck to all players.

In the overall game based on handicaps Dave Thompson blitzed the field with 64, from Mark Burich on 67 and John McGrath on 68 in third.  Well done guys.

The full results and progressive standings can be found on the results page.

CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS Round 1

It was like being on a Safari.  Warm bright conditions, a sense of excitement in the air, people hunting for things in the bushes, a pack of Rhodesian Poachers and not forgetting 43 Trophy hunters, some coming out of the woodwork, chasing the holy grail of Rosehill, in the 2008 club championships.

But with the perfect weather conditions didn’t match the overall scoring, with no one shooting below 80, which means that each group is still wide open with 2 more weeks to go.

Mark Wareham leads the A Graders with an 80, five shots clear of Garry Cook, with Shane Seward a further shot back on 86, but there is a rumor going around that Mark can’t make all 3 weeks???

The A-Reserve leader is Les Eade who carded 86 with Derek Russell one shot back and Eddy Lorenti a further shot back, so things are close.

B-Grade is also very close with Kevin Stonehouse scoring 94, one shot up on Martin Page who is one shot up on Alan Green.

C-Grade see’s Biker Boy Les Musgrave on 93, four shots clear of John McGrath who is one up on Lawrie Wishart.

It’s round 2 next week, so good luck to all players.

Each week there is an overall game based on handicaps and this was taken out by Mark Wareham on 69, with Les Eade in 2nd on 70 and Les Musgrave in 3rd on 71.  Well played guys.

The full club championship results and progressive standings can be found on the results page, which is slowly being rebuilt after our web service provider lost the entire history for us.

In closing, some people may be aware we had some Rhodesian Poachers try to interject into our clubs game on the back nine, which caused some unpleasant scenes.  We remind to all club members, please try and keep up with the group in front at all times, especially at the changeover, as this will help keep the public at bay.  Although this was not the cause of the problems on Saturday, if for some reason the group behind you has fallen back, please try to string things out a little at the changeover, so the following group can catch up and not give the public a chance to jump in.

PRESIDENTS TROPHY

With the results in doubt for a while, we were not in a position to post the results until now, but Garry Cook has won the most prestigious trophy of the year, The Presidents Trophy (well that’s what the Pres says anyway).  He scored an even par 38 stableford points to win by 2 shots over Mark Wareham, with Les Eade in third.

Well done Garry, the Pres looks forward to presenting this highly impressive honor (his words again) at the wind up.

THE QUIZ NIGHT

It was great to see 135 enthusiastic players and guests turn up to the RSL Club in Bellevue to pit their wits in the annual Rosehill Social Golf Club quiz night.  Unfortunately the long delays on the course on Saturday afternoon delayed the start a little to allow everyone to arrive and settle in and once they did the fun and games began.

Firstly we have to send a big thank you to all of the players who managed to get prizes for the night and helped set up the venue and clean up after.  The night would not have happened without your efforts.  Without doubt it was the largest collection of prizes we have ever had, worth in excess of $4,000.  So many in fact that we had something for the top 6 place getters, plus 2 major door prizes, 2 table quiz prizes (won by Steve Blake and John Trewick’s respective tables), 3 heads & tails prizes, a massive raffle, a silent auction and the now infamous Adult Raffle, which was won and sheepishly accepted by Jim Plowman.

Please check out the quiz night sponsors page and remember to do your best to utilize these companies next time you are shopping if you can.  Don’t forget to mention the club as well.

We also have to say thank you very much to all of the 135 people who turned up.  We trust you had fun and we hope that your table picked up a prize or two along the way.

With 10 rounds of 10 questions and the introduction of the “Joker”, there were a number of lead changes but the team who took out the major prize was Hugh Left Teste, comprising of the family and friends of Hugh Letessier (is there anything he is not wining the moment?)  Well played Hugh’s team.  We have to say that they were the quietest winners in history……………Ha, as if.!!!!! J

2nd place went to Shafted (who certainly weren’t) This was a great effort from Steve Blake and his mates.  3rd spot was taken out by Wheelies, lead by club social secretary Jerry Mercer.

The full results are listed below.

Once again thanks to everyone involved

AUGUST MONTHLY MEDAL

The August monthly medal has been run and won by the in form Neil Buscumb.  Neil put the disappointment of having his vehicle broken into in the club car park last week, to come out firing with a +4.  He took the win in a count back over Mark “Ned Kelly” Burich, with David Range taking out 3rd with +3, nice scoring guys.

Just a reminder that after next weeks game there will be no after match activities to allow people to get home and get ready for the quiz nite.  Don’t forget you must bring your tickets with you and pay the $10 per head at the door.

 JULY NEWS UPDATE

WEBSITE DISRUPTION

Our apologies for the lateness in getting last weekends results posted to the web site.  We normally like to have the web site updated by Monday, but unfortunately our web hosting service provider has had technical difficulties which resulted in a complete loss of data from one of the pages (the results page)  This meant we could not update the whole web site with the latest information until they had performed a search of their archives for a back up copy.

To date this page still has not been fixed, but they are attempting to solve the problem another way and it is only now that we have been allowed to update the remaining pages.  Hopefully the full season’s results will be restored shortly.

STABLEFORD BOWL (Round 2)

Glorious conditions and a lot of keen golfers greeted the Rosehill course for round 2 of the Stableford Bowl major trophy event.  A number of players were in the hunt and the pressure was on.  New member Jason Schell who started the day 3 off the pace took out the day’s event with 40 points.  He was followed by the jovial one Dave “Robbo” Robertson, who was getting over a bout of bronchitis managing to gasped his way to 39 points in a count back Pius O’Keeffe who took out third.

But 39 points added to 37 the week before was enough to give Pius the overall result taking out his maiden trophy win.  Runner up was Jason with a combined score of 75 points.  Well played guys, very consistent scoring.  You will both now have to dress to impress at the trophy night on Friday November 28th when you can collect your prize.

STABLEFORD BOWL (Round 1)

Things are very tight at the half way mark of the annual Stableford Bowl major trophy event.  With perfect winter conditions, no one could beat par for the day, with 3 players all scoring 38 points.  The count back saw Martin Page take the lead from Alan Prodger and Peter Buttfield, with Pius O’Keeffe one shot back on 37.

Still in the hunt are 4 players who all scored 35 points, being Lou Digregorio, Alan Green, Hugh Letessier and Jason Schell.  The interesting news is that the top 4 all lost a shot from their handicaps, so effectively the group on 35 points are already one shot closer, but there is just as much chance of a ruffy coming from the pack with a good round, so there is plenty to play for.  Good luck next week in the 2nd and final round.  Oh and don’t forget to get your quiz nite table organised for August 9th

HARLEY CABINETS DAY

36 players turned out for the Annual Harley Cabinets sponsored day, with great thanks to Colin Lane for his sponsorship of the event, which included the social activities after the game.  The winner on the day was a man in form of late being Neil Buscumb, who carded a sensational net 65.  He was 2 shots clear of Jim Plowman, who was also 2 shots clear of Louieeeeeeee Digregorio on 69 (how appropriate)  Well played guys.  Oh and Neil, the Handicapper got ya this time.

JULY MONTHLY MEDAL

Is this man in form or is he in form?  Yes the Swollen One, Hugh Letessier has done it again.  The guy with the free falling Handicap has secured yet another victory, this time winning the July Monthly Medal event.

On a day that started out with threatening weather, the only threat came from Hugh’s clubs, with 40 stableford points.  He was 2 shots clear of Martin Page on 38, with new member Stephen Denys using his brand new handicap of 18, to score 37 points in third.  Well done to all the players.

In closing, please note that due to technical reasons, next weeks results can not be updated until Tuesday July 15th.  Sorry for the inconvenience.

JUNE NEWS UPDATE

MATCHPLAY FINALS

Neil Buscumb is the 2008 Matchplay champion after a tense battle with Mark Wareham, taking out the win 3 + 2.  In the Plate event Grant Stokes also had a 3 + 2 victory over Steve Hopkins.  Well played all four finalists and congratulations to the winners

In the Stroke event for the rest of the members, Kevin Stonehouse continued his good form with a net 67, 2 shots clear of Jerry Mercer on 69, with the returning Steve Blake scoring 71 to take out third.

MATCHPLAY SEMI FINALS

And then there were 2.  Neil Buscumb will play Mark Wareham in next weeks Matchplay final after Mark had a win over John McGrath 4+3 while Neil was pushed to the 19th by Garry Cook.

In the Plate event Steve Hopkins will meet Grant Stokes, with Grant winning 2+1 over Peter Barrett while in spectacular style Steve Chipped in for an Eagle on the 15th to win 4+3 over Martin Page.

Good luck to the finalists who will do battle over 18 holes next Saturday.

In the Par event for the rest of the members, the Swollen One Hugh Letessier continued his amazing good form with a +3 win.  We have a good source who says that Hugh was spanking the ball off the Tee some 350 metres (well that’s what Hugh reckoned) but he kept grabbing his knee after some shots, in obvious pain.  He was mumbling something about more surgery but we had no idea what the hell he was on about???

Coming in second was Kevin Stonehouse, who beat Les Cook in a count back, both players scoring +1.  Nice scoring guys.

MATCHPLAY QUARTER FINALS

Perfect conditions greeted the 8 players who fought out the Matchplay championship quarter finals, with convincing wins going to Garry Cook, John McGrath & Mark Wareham.

However, the closest battle of the day saw Neil Buscumb winning 2 up against Jim Wyatt. Mind you Neil had a lot of support with his family right behind him the whole day.  You see he forgot his trusty golf glove and towel and his daughter Carrie made a special trip down to the course just to make sure Dad had it, as she knew how important these things are.  Problem is she was in such a rush that she beat him to the club house and therefore couldn’t find him.

Neil BuscumbMartin the Stud So she came in to see the rest of the gang and

unfortunately for her was enthusiastically assisted by the

“Stud in Waiting” Martin Page.  As a result, the poor girl

couldn’t wait to get out of there.  Trouble is that Martin was

then hounding Neil all day, wanting a date with the lovely

Carrie.  Martin’s a bit over confident though, he is calling

Neil “Dad” already and later in the day when Martin won the

Leg O............ err, we mean the Bottle of Port, he gave it to

Neil to take home to ”Mum” to impress her.

Father and Son (in-law)?  As if.!!

Later that evening Neil was heard to say something about “Hell freezing over” but we’re unsure exactly what he was referring to?

In the Plate event, Grant Stokes and Peter Barrett had convincing wins, while Martin Page had a walkover, with Pius being a last minute withdrawal.  In the closest game Steve Hopkins had a win 1 up over Les Eade.  The full results and draw for next week can be found on the Results page.

In the Stableford event that was played for the rest of the members, Club Secretary and all round nice guy Derek Russell (tell me, who writes this crap?) blitzed the field with 45 stableford points to take out the win from Hugh Letessier on 42 points with David range on 38 points in third.  Much to Derek’s disgust the CCR was only 38, so he has now lost 3 shots from his handicap, taking him to 13, while the in form Hugh looses yet another shot down to 17.  Derek & Hugh would really like to thank the other players for “throwing the anchor out”……….Not!!!

In other breaking news, the world has turned upside down for club laughing boy Dave Robertson.  Robbo, who hasn’t stopped wearing his 2007 B grade club champion jumper to the course, to his work, to bed, for the last 3 months, was constantly complaining that the honour boards at the club had not been updated to show his magnificent victory from last year.  So the club finally got its act together and had the names put up.  As you will see from the shot below for some reason Robbo wasn’t happy?

JUNE MONTHLY MEDAL

David Gallop After last weeks virtual wash out (which has an updated story below) fine

weather finally shone down on Rosehill.  43 players (including 3 who had

not booked) came in search of the glowing yellow shirt in the June

monthly medal stroke event and David Gallop had an absolute day out.

David “saddled” up for the “mane” event and “trotted” along for a while, but

he had his lucky “horse shoe’s” on and the “form guide” was thrown out

the window as he Eagled the 15th, sinking only a 3 footer.  This gave him

the momentum to “gallop” in and cross the “finish post” to win in a “canter”.

Bookies Delight

David carded a net 62 to put on a real “show, jumping” for joy at the end and claiming his first ever yellow “polo” shirt.  He couldn’t wait to get back to the club house to “stir-rup” the other players, saying that his “grooming” would now be impeccable.  But space was limited and we were kept inside the “stewards” room as, would you believe it, there was a “Bridle” party at the club.

David will need to be mindful next time he gets back on the “Merry go round” as the Handicapper has made sure he is carrying “additional weight”.  He has dropped him down 3 shots to 27.  Let’s hope that with cold weather predicted this week David he doesn’t pick up “Equine influenza” as he promised to buy everyone a beer next week.  Yes, that’s right, we are all gonna get a “pony”!!!!

But enough “horsing” around, there were some other very nice performances put in as well, with players "jockeying" for position.  Hugh Letessier carding a 66, which on most other days would have won.  3rd spot went to Mark Wareham with a well played 68.  Just to let you know, Eddy Lorrenti or as we like to say “Mr Ed” didn’t make the “Winners Circle”.  We are not too sure if he was a late “scratching” or he just left early to get home to his “nose bag”, which is part of his “stable” diet.

LIFE MEMBERS / REUNION DAY - UPDATE

An update on the wash out from last week.  Turns out that of the 20 players who took to the pool, 10 swam the distance with 8 cards handed back in.  Winner on the day was Richard Church who carded 46 stableford points, with an amazing 75 of the stick.  Rumour has it that he actually has gills.  2nd spot went to our newest member Peter Marriot with 31 points and 3rd went to Hugh Letessier with 30.  Congratulations to those guys who finished, perhaps you should all buy some lotto tickets as your lucks in, especially as you didn’t get zapped by lightening.

MAY NEWS UPDATE

LIFE MEMBERS / REUNION DAY

It has to be the greenhouse effect.  For the second time this year rain and of more danger Thunder and Lightening ruined the Life member’s day at the club on Saturday.  37 players turned up but atrocious conditions saw the course management offer the option of playing or not to the club.  Amazingly 20 players still took their chances in what turned out to be worsening rain and storms which even made the National news.  We understand that some of the guys are still paddling back to the club house.  Of interest, a worker at Perth Airport was struck by lightening at 4.00pm that afternoon.  A bit too close for comfort.

MATCHPLAY ROUND ONE

37 players turned out in lousy weather conditions to see the top 32 qualifiers battle out round one of the Matchplay Trophy and Plate events for 2008.  All the scores can be checked in the results section but we have to say that there were a number of really close games as well as a few blow outs.

Trophy event #1 seed Ken Moore had a day he’s rather forget going down to 16th seed Peter Buttfield in the biggest upset of the round 5+4.  While Kevin Pearce needed the 19th to take the win over David Range.

In the plate event 4 matches were not decided until the very last hole and we are told that quite a crowd gathered to see the tension of the finish between David Gallop and the infamous Robbo, with David taking the spoils and Robbo bursting into tears!!!!

Don’t forget that the next week’s game is the Life Members Reunion day, so if you know of any old members who want to come down for a hit and giggle, get them to book in with Cookie before Wednesday.

MATCHPLAY DRAW

The match committee are pleased to announce the highly anticipated draw for this week's matchplay trophy and plate event.  Special thanks goes out to those players who did the right thing and withdrew from the event as they were not able to compete in all of the rounds.  Good luck to the lucky 32 players on Saturday.

HANDICAP CHAMPIONSHIP (Final)

What a difference a shave makes.  Mark Burich cleaned up his face and then cleaned up the 2008 Handicap Championships.  Mark carded a sensational 63 to back up his 67 for a total of 130 to blitz the field.  Stuart Craven was 4 shots back in second with an impressive 134.  This meant that both players also won their respective grades.  Full results are listed below:

A-Grade                                   A-Reserve

Mark Burich (130)                      Stuart Craven (134)

Garry Cook (139)                       Neil Buscumb (141)

B-Grade                                   C-Grade

Alan Green (141)                        John McGrath (143)

Les Musgrave (150)                    Pius O’Keeffe (143)

Once again don’t forget that next week is the first round of the match play championships.  Please let the match committee know (via email at info@rosehillsgc.com) if you are not in a position to complete the entire competition over the four rounds to be held on May 24th, June 14th, June 21st & June 28th.  This allows reserve players to move into the competition.

HANDICAP CHAMPIONSHIP (Round 1)

It was great to see 38 players turn up to battle out the first round of the 2008 Handicap Championships and it was the defending champion from 2007, Jerry Mercer who has had the best possible start with a 66, which included an Eagle on the 4th.  Running in 2nd place is a new player to the club called Mark Burich who scored a 67.  What a strange coincidence that he has the same name as the infamously nicknamed Ned Kelly, with the exception that this new guys face and head are as bald as Homer Simpson.  Third spot on the day went to the jovial Pom, Stuart Craven who also hit a 66.  Rounding out some good golf was Coin Lane who scored yet another Eagle, this time on the 11th.  Well done guys.

As the Handicap Championships are awarded to all Grades, there is plenty of golf still left to play next Saturday.  The above place getters are all leading their respective grades as well as being in the running for the overall trophy, but there are a number of players nipping at their heels.  The leaders are listed below:

A-Grade                                   A-Reserve

Mark Burich (67)                        Stuart Craven (67)

Garry Cook (68)                         Les Eade (68)

Alan Prodger (68)                       Numerous guys on (70)

B-Grade                                   C-Grade

Jerry Mercer (66)                        Pius O’Keeffe (71)

Dave Robertson (69)                   John Trewick (75)

Les Musgrave (70)                      David Lord (75)

The handicapper has had his say though and Jerry has to defend the title next week with one less stroke than he had this week, now down to 17, however he will still remain in the B-Grade comp as that is where he started.  The same rule applies for all players who find themselves in a similar situation. i.e. You play off your new handicap in week 2 but stay in the same grade as the prevous week.  Good luck to all players in the final round.  Don’t forget that the week after is the first round of the match play championships.  Please let the match committee know if you are not in a position to complete the entire competition over the four rounds to be held on May 24th, June 14th, June 21st & June 28th so that reserve players can move into the competition.

MAY MONTHLY MEDAL

It was another full house as 40 players turned up in search of the holy grail of golf, the monthly medal shirt.  Great conditions saw great scoring too, with the winner being Peter Buttfield with 43 stableford points, in a count from partner in crime Ray Reichard.  3 other players then came in with 40 points with 3rd spot taken out by Garry Cook.  So all 5 players better keep their eyes on the handicap board as the CCR was 39!!!

Of concern to the club though is the ridiculously slow public groups which were put in front of half the club.  This spoilt the day for some our guys who actually took over one hour to play the last 3 holes.  Phone calls and complaints were directed at the course staff, but the course marshal had left the course early and the shop staff could not leave the premises on this occasion to hurry the public along.  Please note that we will be discussing this type of problem further with the course management.

APRIL NEWS UPDATE

MATCH PLAY DAY

A fun day was had by all (well by most) in a one off game of Match play.  It would be unfair to mention some results over the others, so check out the results page for a full listing.  It was a good warm up for those who are in the match play finals coming up in May and June.

Speaking of upcoming events, the Quiz Nite is on again for 2008.  7.00pm Saturday August 9th is the date, so mark that in your diary and make up a table or 2 with your family and friends.  It’s a fun night out and is also a major fund raiser for the club, so please do your best to attend.  Also if you can help with any donations of prizes for the nite, please speak to Derek or Keith who are organizing the proceedings.  Anything you can get will be greatly appreciated, so if you are working in the business world or have contacts who are, please see what prizes they can offer.  Click here to read more.

SPONSORS DAY

31 players turned out for the Annual Sponsors day in weather that ended up fine after forecast of showers.  And it was Club President and Mad Blues fan (you’d have to be) Kevin Pearce who carded a sensational 77 off the stick to win the Sponsors day Stableford event with 40 points.  The next spots were tightly contested as well, with Steve Hopkins pipping Les Eade into third on a count back with 39 points.  Well done to all players for some good scoring.

After the game, the club put on a sausage sizzle, courtesy of some of the funds donated by our many sponsors.  Thanks going to Jerry and the social committee for organising this.

APRIL MONTHLY MEDAL / MATCHPLAY QUALIFYING COMBINED

What a massive turn out of players we had for the Match play qualifying, which was also combined with the monthly medal being re-scheduled after the course was washed out the week before.  41 players turned up and this caused a major problem.  The maximum spots we could gain were 40 and with such a glorious day, “Joe Public” was everywhere, which meant we could not get all of our members on the course.  Thankfully the match committee did some quick rearranging with both Jerry and Shane playing with some of the following public so that we could all squeeze on.  This did nothing for their personal game but was appreciated.  Well done guys.

However, this highlights the importance of making you’re booking and sticking to it.  You must let Les Cook know by Wednesday evening if you are going to play.  Please do not turn up in the hope that you will get a game as this can not always be guaranteed, with Saturday being the perfect example.  If we have to turn you away, then you must understand the situation is beyond our control.  The same also applies to booking and not showing up.  If we are short on numbers because of your non appearance and the course charges us, then you will have to pay the course fee.

While on the subject of numbers, the club is disappointed with the way the course mixed in public with our club event, which caused very long delays and did little to enhance the day.  Whilst this is out of our control, we as a club have raised our concerns with the course management, as it is clear that all players (not just our club) need to keep up with the group in front, as well as the group in front playing at a decent pace, so as not to have a concertina effect when we take to the course.

Now for the game.  Two outstanding rounds of 65 saw a count back separate Ken Moore in first place from Mark Wareham for the April Monthly Medal with Colin Lane taking 3rd with 68.  Added to this were not one but two Eagles!!!  Alan Prodger left the putter in the bag when he chipped in on the 4th, while Ray Reichard did the business on the 9th.  Nice work by all 5 players.

The resulting order of play from Saturday’s game also works for the 2 match play events we are running this year.  The top 16 players go into the main championship club trophy event and 17 – 32 go into a Plate event, which will run in unison. (all listed below)  This way more players get the opportunity to participate in match play, which is what was asked for at the AGM.  Please note that there is also a separate one off match play game over the Anzac day long weekend, this is not part of the Championship

The match play Championship will run over many weeks and is a knock out format, so eventually we will end up with two finalists in the Championship and Plate events.  To be fair to all players, if you know that you will not be able to play on any of the selected days, we are asking that you withdraw from the comp and allow players who can make all games play, this will eliminate any byes and move players up the seeding list.  Please check the dates below and let Shane know if you can not play the full comp out, if you are successful.

Finally, next weeks event is our sponsor’s day event, please note that the club will be putting on a sausage sizzle after the game at the course facilities.

APRIL MONTHLY MEDAL

Unbelievable rain saw the course deemed unplayable, as can be seen in the photo’s below and play was abandoned before we could even get in an attempt to play for the April Monthly Medal.  The Rosehill course kindly waved our booking under the extreme circumstances, which was greatly appreciated.

Thanks to all the players who did turn up with the best intentions of playing and well done to Jerry for selling all the lucky 10’s.  Winners announced next week.

Club Captain Colin Lane has advised that next Saturdays round will now combine the April Monthly Medal along with the qualifying for the 2008 match play with a stroke competition.  Please don't forget to tell Les Cook if your playing via the web or phone.  We hope to see you all there.

MARCH NEWS UPDATE

FOUNDATION CUP

Hugh Windy conditions tested player’s skills in the Stableford event to decide the

winner of the 2008 Foundation Cup.  Many tried but the victor was the

Swollen One himself, Hugh Letessier with a blistering 44 points.  He was 2

shots clear of Alan A-Team Prodger who impressed with 42 points.

3rd spot was taken out by the “Family Guy” Richard Church, who is

obviously finding being under the thumb beneficial for his game.

Hugh da man

But the best score of the day came at the 19th, when our handicapper broke the good news to Hugh.  No longer on 21 after his performance, he is now down to 18.  A whole 3 shots gone in the blink of an eye.  Well played Hugh.

BRING A MATE DAY

Yes it was that annual time of the year which we ask players to “rent-a-mate”. It was great to see some new faces (and one old one) down at the club to try their luck out in a Par event.

The winner on the day was Garry Cook who carded a very nice +3 to win in a count back from Jerry Mercer, with Kevin “Footy Tipster Extraordinaire” D’Cruze in 3rd with a +2.  Oh and boys the bad news is that the handicapper got all three of you!!!.

Some of the new faces to make an appearance were Chris Sullivan who was must have been paid handsomely to be Martin Page’s mate for the day.  The Swollen One Hugh was paired up with Peter Marriot (is this a new partner in crime?) and the Pres brought along his Eagle loving son-in-law, Craig Dobbie.  I’m sure when Craig tied the knot that he wasn’t expecting to have to partner the father-in-law as part of the deal.  Talk about being ripped off.  And finally Derek dragged along a blast from the past in Tony Amato, a long standing member from the nineties, who graced us with his presence after he has been working overseas for some years.  Problem was that Tony’s so used to having caddies up in Asia do all the hard work around the course, that he expected his group to get the flag for him (even when it was his job) not to mention clean his golf ball, take his club and give advise on which way the putt should roll.  Hey Tony, that won't work at Royal Rosehill.!!!

Seriously though, it was great to see these guys come along and we hope that they all enjoyed themselves and will be back.  Just to let all members know, even though Saturday was the bring a mate event, you can bring a guest for up to 3 games a year, so if you know someone who’s interested, bring them down to see if they like it.  As long as they stick to the dress codes and rules we are glad to see them.

PATRONS TROPHY

Richard “The Stud” Church was in blistering form to take out the first major individual trophy for 2008.  The Patrons Trophy was decided with a round of stroke and had a good field of competitors.  Churchy carded a very smart net 65 to be 2 shots clear of Peter Buttfield on 67 with Garry Cook taking out 3rd on 69.

Everything comes at a price though, as the handicapper had his revenged with Richard dropping 2 strokes, down to 13 and Peter losing one down to 18.  Still, it was very well played guys, so we guess it was worth it.

COMBINED STABLEFORD (DRAWN)

A healthy 39 players turned up to play in the combined Stableford Drawn team’s event, whereby the total of both scores made up the results.  Jim Plowman and Kevin Stonehouse lead the way with 80 points, 3 clear of Richard ‘the Stud” Church and Shane “the Driver” Seward with a 77 who got 2nd in a count back from Mark “Pusher” Wilson and Alan “A Team” Prodger.  Well played by the top 6.  If anyone can help us with a nickname for the Plowman/Stonehouse dream team, please email it in.

Also we would like to report on the health of some of our members past and present.  Les Shackleton who had a heart attack the day after he retired from work is back on his feet again and hit his first bucket of balls last Saturday and will be dipping his toe onto the course for nine holes this week, which is great news.

We also hear that John Walker is getting better from his heart surgery last year and is back at work and may make an appearance soon.  Les Musgrave, the original Hells Angel Bikie has had one of his knees replaced for the second time (he had them both done 10 odd years ago but wore the left one out again). The op is a slow process to get over, but worth the effort.

Finally our own Handicapper, Bill McComb has had a large melanoma taken from behind his ear (and we mean large!!!).  He currently looks like a backwards Phantom of the Opera, with a white plaster covering the spot, but we’re pleased to report that he was down at the club for the committee meeting last Saturday and hopes to be hitting that little white ball some time soon.  Some players will note that his op didn’t stop him from taking points from their handicaps though!!!  Keep getting better guys.

MARCH MONTHLY MEDAL

What a great turn out we had for the first day of the new 2008 winter comp at Rosehill.  It was like a school reunion with so many players returning for the first time to start the new winter season (did someone forget to tell the weather bureau?).  In all 34 souls (including 5 guys who can be found in the “Who’s New” section) braved the hot & humid conditions to try their luck with the first monthly medal being up for grabs in a stroke event.  And the result could not have got any tighter with 3 guys scoring net 69’s at the top of the leader board.  Much to everyone’s surprise (and Louie’s utter disgust) it was announced on the day that Derek (Jack) Russell squeezed out Ray Reichard in a count back, to win the Holly Woven Grail, with Eddy Lorenti taking out third.  But in late breaking news the Handicapper reworked the cards on Sunday and using the newer countback method awarded the win to Ray, who now gets to choose his shirt size, from Derek in second place.  Well done to all 3 players.

Naeked Eade But the real concern on the day was the emergence of the

Rosehill Flasher.  Apparently one of our own has been caught

flashing his Greek Adonis body off to passers by in broad

daylight at the front of the golf club!!!  He was heard to say

“hey babe, want some of this action” to one innocent passer by,

but to the flashers disappointment Louie wasn’t interested,

which really was a surprise!  If anyone happens to know the

name of the perpetrator, please contact the local police, who by

chance happen to live just up the road from the flashers house.

  Do you know this man?

A WELCOME FROM THE PRES

Kevin Firstly I would like to extend a warm welcome to you all for the 2008 Rosehill

Social Golf Club Winter Season.  I would also like to welcome to Eddy Lorenti,

Shane Seward and our money man Les Cook onto the committee and look

forward to their contribution in continuing to move the club forward with our aim

being to make your day at golf an enjoyable and relaxing experience.

The committee for 2008 has been meeting over the last couple of months to

plan the golf season both on and off the course.  We have made changes to our fixtures as many of you have requested, so we look forward to getting your feedback on them.

Socially we have the weekend away booked for the second weekend of November like normal and the presentation night is back to the last Friday of November.  We will also be having the quiz nite and many other social events, so stay tuned to the web site.

At the AGM a very enthusiastic discussion took place of how to spend the excess funds the club had left over from 2007.  The committee decided that it would be a perfect opportunity for the club to build up its assets, so the club has invested in a Laptop to be used by the Treasurer for correct record keeping and accounting.  A new accounting software system was also purchased.  Full details will be in the financial report for March.

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Alf for again doing a fantastic job of keeping the club active with his summer golf and congratulations to all the winners and thank you all for supporting the club during summer.

So it’s down to business for the 2008 winter season.  May all your shots stay on the short grass and those putts roll in, but most of all, enjoy your time at your club, as that’s the main thing.

Cheers
